Very Remote Community Utilities Worker

Employees inspect and maintain essential public utilities (excluding mine sites) such as poles, structures, associated hardware and generating plant within Very Remote Communities. All work on essential electrical utilities will be undertaken in a non-energised (Dead) environment other than for testing purposes.
Please note
Very Remote Communities means a community with restricted access and very little accessibility of goods, services and opportunities for social interaction. Very remote communities experience high levels of unemployment that lead to economic disadvantage.

 

Summary of Training

Core Units – all required

  • Solve problems in ELV single path circuits
  • Apply Occupational Health Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components
  • Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
  • Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
  • Document and apply measures to control OHS risks associated with electrotechnology work
  • Maintain safety and tidiness of remote area power supply systems
  • Work safely with remote area power supply systems
  • Maintain and monitor remote area power generation facilities
  • Apply sustainable energy and environmental procedures
  • Operate plant and equipment near live electrical conductors and apparatus
  • Working safely near live electrical apparatus
  • Solve electrical problems in remote community network apparatus
  • Solve electrical problems in remote community network systems
  • Maintain operation of remote area power generation plant
  • Test and verify distribution remote area installations

 

Elective Units - to the value of 360 points

  • Perform and record sampling
  • Lay ESI electrical cables 
  • Install and maintain de-energised low voltage underground polymeric cables
  • Inspect overhead poles/structures and electrical apparatus
  • Install and maintain low voltage services in remote communities (overhead)  
  • Install and maintain public lighting systems in remote communities  
  • Install and maintain poles, structures and associated hardware
  • Install and maintain overhead conductors and cables 
  • Install and maintain low voltage services in remote communities (underground)
