Senior Fashion Designer

This qualification is designed to provide high-level skills in fashion design and also provides options for high level skills in specialist patternmaking, managing design and product development processes, and management of fashion design systems.

Summary of Training

CORE UNITS (15 required)

  • Follow defined OHS policies and procedures
  • Identify fibres and fabrics
  • Modify patterns to create basic styles
  • Draw and interpret a basic sketch
  • Identify fabric performance and handling requirements
  • Identify design process for fashion designs
  • Apply design studio process
  • Interact and network with fashion industry participants
  • Develop product specifications for fashion design
  • Evaluate commercial viability of designs
  • Manage product development of fashion designs
  • Manage fashion design process
  • Develop a fashion range
  • Apply studio processes to create and produce designs for commercial production
  • Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices

Elective Units (30 units required with a min. of 23 from Group A. a max. of 8 from Group B)

  • Develop patterns from a block using basic patternmaking principles
  • Draw a trade drawing for fashion design
  • Apply principles of colour theory to fashion design development
  • Assist in preparation of preliminary design concepts
  • Calculate cost estimates for fashion products
  • Communicate and sell design concepts
  • Conduct quality assurance for patterns
  • Construct stock size block for garment to meet size and fit specifications
  • Create pattern to meet design specifications applying
  • Cut fabrics for prototype designs
  • Grade 2D patterns
  • Identify influences on contemporary fashion designs and construction techniques
  • Create pattern from block to meet customer specifications
  • Sew design prototypes
  • Source materials and resources for production of fashion design
  • Use and apply sizing systems appropriate for fashion design
  • Use electronic fashion design tools
  • Drape fabrics to make patterns
  • Design bras and swimwear
  • Develop and test patterns for bras and swimwear
  • Analyse fit model
  • Develop marketing plans for fashion products
  • Manipulate fabrics to create new finishes
  • Evaluate fashion designs against set criteria
  • Analyse influences on contemporary fashion designs
  • Conduct fashion design purchasing
  • Cost design production
  • Develop and present design concepts within specific guidelines
  • Produce fashion illustrations
  • Perform contour draping
  • Develop merchandising plans for fashion products
  • Construct complex blocks for fashion garments
  • Develop patterns for complex fashion garments
  • Grade shaped patterns
  • Apply design studio processes to meet client brief
  • Determine and specify advanced construction processes
  • Analyse individual fit and make pattern alterations
  • Manage advanced patternmaking processes
  • Drape structured over-garments
  • Implement specialised patternmaking technologies
  • Analyse fashion industry textiles to guide commercial development
  • Operate computing technology in a Textiles, Clothing and Footwear workplace
  • Participate in production planning processes
  • Coordinate quality assurance for textiles, clothing and footwear products and services
  • Work with international textiles, clothing and footwear supply chains
  • Develop and implement a sales and marketing strategy
  • Manage quality system and procedures
  • Research and evaluate processes and products
  • Negotiate and manage contracts to produce finished design products
