Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Technical Officer

As a Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Technical Officer you would install, commission, maintain and diagnose faults/malfunctions on refrigeration systems and equipment  that apply to commercial food storage and preservation.  Work can also apply to air conditioning, air distribution equipment, special applications and associated electrical systems. It includes ERAC requirements for an ‘Electrician‘s licence‘.

Summary of Training

CORE UNITS (all required)

  • Participate in development and follow a personal competency development plan
  • Write specifications for electrotechnology engineering projects
  • Apply Occupational Health and Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components
  • Solve problems in d.c. circuits
  • Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
  • Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
  • Implement and monitor OHS energy sector procedures and policies
  • Compile and produce an energy sector detailed report
  • Document and apply measures to control OHS risks associated with electrotechnology work
  • Solve problems in single and three phase low voltage machines
  • Solve problems in single and three phase low voltage electrical apparatus and circuits
  • Arrange circuits, control and protection for general electrical installations
  • Solve problems in electromagnetic devices and related circuits
  • Solve problems in low voltage a.c. circuits
  • Install low voltage wiring and accessories
  • Install appliances, switchgear and associated accessories for low voltage electrical installations
  • Verify compliance and functionality of low voltage general electrical installations
  • Terminate cables, cords and accessories for low voltage circuits
  • Select wiring systems and cables for low voltage general electrical installations
  • Trouble-shoot and repair faults in low voltage electrical apparatus and circuits
  • Develop and connect electrical control circuits
  • Prepare and connect refrigerant tubing and fittings
  • Establish the basic operating conditions of vapour compression systems
  • Establish the basic operating conditions of air conditioning systems
  • Install refrigerant pipe work, flow controls and accessories
  • Install air conditioning and refrigeration systems, major components and associated equipment
  • Recover, pressure test, evacuate, charge and leak test refrigerants
  • Verify functionality and compliance of refrigeration and air conditioning installations
  • Select refrigerant piping, accessories and associated controls
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in air conditioning and refrigeration systems and components
  • Commission air conditioning and refrigeration systems
  • Find and rectify faults in motors and associated controls in refrigeration and air conditioning systems
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in air conditioning and refrigeration control systems
  • Solve problems in low voltage refrigeration circuits
  • Develop energy sector strategies to address environmental and sustainability issues

ELECTIVE UNITS (with a total weighting of 80 points)

  • Evaluate performance of low voltage electrical apparatus
  • Evaluate and report on the indoor air quality of buildings
