Working as an Integrated Rating you will be a general crew member on a ship and your work can be varied. You could be completing lookout duties on deck and steering a vessel under the direction of the officer of the watch, or you could be carrying out maintenance duties in the engine room under the direction of engineering officers.

Summary of Training

Core Units - 17 required

  • Provide First Aid
  • Contribute to basic cargo operations on liquefied gas tankers
  • Contribute to basic cargo operations on oil and chemical tankers (basic oil and chemical)
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on a vessel
  • Perform dogging on board a vessel
  • Use and care for hand and power tools
  • Assist in an emergency response
  • Contribute to fire prevention and firefighting (basic firefighting)
  • Follow vessel security procedures (security awareness training)
  • Observe personal safety and social responsibility (PSSR)
  • Operate emergency equipment and apply emergency procedures
  • Operate survival craft, rescue boats and lifesaving appliances (proficiency in survival craft)
  • Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment and personal survival techniques (PST)
  • Follow environmental work practices
  • Use seamanship skills on board a vessel
  • Work in accordance with an issued permit
  • Enter confined space

Elective Units – 10 required

  • Maintain mooring equipment
  • Conduct mooring operations using mechanical equipment
  • Perform mooring operations
  • Operate deck machinery, cargo handling gear and equipment on a vessel
  • Perform rigging on board a vessel
  • Steer a vessel under direction of the Master
  • Contribute to monitoring and controlling a safe navigational watch          
  • Contribute to routine engine maintenance on a vessel
  • Contribute to the operation of engine equipment and associated propulsion plant
  • Contribute to monitoring and controlling a safe engine watch
