Horse Trimmer

Working as a Horse Trimmer you would not only examine a horse’s hoof to detect bruises and cracks, but would use a holistic approach by incorporating the horse’s diet, environment and movement.

Summary of Training

Core Units – 12 required

  • Handle horses safely
  • Apply knowledge of horse behaviour
  • Manage personal health and fitness for working with horses
  • Trim equine hooves
  • Select and fit hoof boots to meet individual equine need
  • Apply knowledge of equine musculoskeletal system, biomechanics and pathologies for effective hoof care
  • Coordinate day to day equine service operations
  • Determine hoof care and hoof protection plans for equines
  • Communicate effectively with clients and team members
  • Carry out basic hoof care procedures
  • Comply with industry animal welfare requirements
  • Maintain workplace safety

Elective Units – 5 required

  • Use and maintain hand and power tools for farriery or hoof care activities
  • Use farriery techniques to meet special needs of equines
  • Follow equine biosecurity and infection control procedures
  • Maintain financial records
  • Comply with regulatory, taxation and insurance requirements for the micro business
