Switchgear Tradesperson

Working as a Switchgear Tradesperson you would construct, assemble, troubleshoot and wire switchboards, control panels, circuit breakers and generator system controls. You may perform relay testing on relay protection schemes.

Summary of Training

  • Assemble, mount and connect control gear and switchgear
  • Fabricate and assemble bus bars
  • Mount and wire control panel equipment
  • Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • Document and apply measures to control WHS risks associated with electrotechnology work
  • Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components
  • Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
  • Participate in switchgear and control gear work and competency development activities
  • Solve problems in direct current circuits
  • Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
  • Arrange circuits, control and protection for electrical installations
  • Carry out basic repairs to electrical components and equipment
  • Develop and connect electrical control circuits
  • Solve problems in direct current (d.c.) machines
  • Solve problems in low voltage a.c. circuits
  • Solve problems in magnetic and electromagnetic devices
  • Terminate cables, cords and accessories for low voltage circuits
  • Test and connect alternating current (a.c.) rotating machines
  • Test and connect transformers
  • Apply environmentally and sustainable procedures in the energy sector
  • Disconnect - reconnect electrical equipment connected to low voltage (LV) installation wiring
  • Comply with scheduled and preventative maintenance program processes
  • Repairs basic electronic apparatus faults by replacement of components
  • Repair and maintain mechanical components of electrical machines
  • Overhaul and repair major switchgear and control gear
