Diesel Engine Mechanic

Working as a Diesel Engine Mechanic you would carry out diagnostic procedures, service, repair and overhaul diesel engines and associated components. You could work on a variety of vehicles and machinery ranging from cars to trucks and buses. You would also repair and service cooling systems, diesel fuel systems, emission control systems and perform welding procedures.

  • Use and maintain measuring equipment in an automotive workplace

  • Assemble engine blocks and sub-assemblies
  • Dismantle and evaluate engine blocks and sub-assemblies
  • Recondition engine cylinder heads
  • Work effectively with others in an automotive workplace
  • Diagnose and repair compression ignition engine management systems
  • Diagnose and repair instruments and warning systems
  • Diagnose and repair charging systems
  • Diagnose and repair starting systems
  • Diagnose and repair automotive electrical systems
  • Carry out mechanical pre-repair operations
  • Select and use bearings, seals, gaskets, sealants and adhesives
  • Inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems
  • Diagnose and repair engine forced-induction systems
  • Inspect and service CNG fuel systems
  • Diagnose and repair CNG fuel systems
  • Carry out manual metal arc welding on components
  • Carry out basic gas metal arc welding
