Do the research

Find out as much as possible about the company and it's reputation. It will be easy to research big companies but may be harder if it's a small business.

Start by looking at their website and find out about:

  • The size of the company - how many people, how many sites;
  • The products and services it offers;
  • Who their customers are; and
  • The workplace culture - what it’s like to work there.

Applying for the job

When applying for jobs, it is very important to read the job description and application instructions well.

A big mistake that many people make, is not including all the information or documents required by the job advertisement.

If unsure of what to include in the application, don't be affraid to get in contact with the contact person listed on the job advertisement to confirm the requirements.

The Interview

The Interview

You may be interviewed by one or two people, or by a panel.

Ask the person who contacts you to set up the interview about the time and place, but also the interview arrangements.

It's good to be totally prepared.

Preparing for Interview Questions

Identify key strengths and think of examples of how to demonstrate the right skills to successfully do the job. The interviewer may also ask about personal weaknesses.

Think of ways to answer these questions in a positive way - answer with a weakness that doesn't relate to the role applied for or indicate ways to improve a weakness.

If an interviewer ever addresses a gap in skills or knowledge, express a willingness to learn.
