New Minister for Skills and Vocational Education

On Sunday August 26, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced some changes to the Australian Government Ministry. These changes will see Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash take on the role of Minister for Small and Family Business, as well as Skills and Vocational Education. Previous to this role, she held the position of Minister for Jobs and Innovation.

Former Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, the Hon Karen Andrews MP, will move into the role of Minister for Industry, Science and Technology.

As a result of these changes, Skills and Vocational Education will move from the Education and Training portfolio into the Jobs and Small Business portfolio. The new Minister for Education, the Hon Dan Tehan MP, will oversee early childhood education, schooling, and higher education.

Historically, the area of skills and training has moved department a number of times. Most notably in 2014, when skills and training was shifted from the Department of Industry to the Department of Education and Training.

As apprenticehships and traineeships are a combination of paid employment and training in a nationally recognisied qualification, they sit particularly well under the departments for education or the departments for employment.
