Have your say: The National Student Outcomes Survey

Each year vocational education and training (VET) students are surveyed to find out their reasons for undertaking training, their employment outcomes, and how satisfied they were with the training. The survey is run by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. 

Students who completed their whole qualification, known as graduates, and those who completed one or more subjects but not the whole qualification, known as subject completers, are included in the survey. This year the survey will include students from both public and private training providers, and will ask even more subject completers for their opinions to try and find out why completion rates in the sector are so low.

Apprentices and trainees

Apprentices and trainees are included in the Student Outcomes Survey. Data from the survey can help inform the sector on how well apprenticeships and traineeships are preparing students for their careers.

In 2016, the majority of all students who graduated from their apprenticeship qualification (graduates in the graph below) were employed or in further study, with a higher percentage of trade apprentices in employment or further study. Of the students who completed a subject but not the whole qualification, the percentage of those in employment or further study was lower, especially for non-trade apprentices and trainees.
