Quarterly Apprenticeship and Traineeship statistics

These documents provide a summary of the National Apprentice and Trainee Collection statistics for each State and Territory. This data has been sourced from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) National Apprentice and Trainee Collection, 2016.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

Australian Bureau of Statistics

The ABS holds data on the Australian labour market, education and skills, and industry among others. Data can be accessed through the Statistics tab.

Australian Census

The Australian Census is run every 5 years with the most recent being the 2016 Census. Data  is collected on items such as education participation and qualifications, and employment. The Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset links some data from the 2008 and 2011 Census, with the 2016 data anticipated to be added in the future.

National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER)

National Apprentice and Trainee Collection

NCVER released quarterly and annual statistics about Australian Apprenticeship commencements, completions, withdrawals, and numbers in training.

National Apprentice and Trainee Destinations 2010

This survey collected information from apprentices and trainees around 9 months after leaving their training. Information includes reasons for not completing, satisfaction with the apprenticeship or traineeship, and employment and further study outcomes.

National Student Outcomes Survey

A survey of vocational education and training (VET) students including apprentices and trainees, both subject completers who have not finished a qualification, and graduates. Information includes reasons for undertaking training, satisfaction with training, employment and further study outcomes.

VOCSTATS

VOCSTATS is a product which allows users to construct their own tables via an interactive web interface, using databases from NCVER collections. VOCSTATS is specifically targeted at those users who have a requirement for highly tailored outputs, have a good understanding of the intricacies and limitations of the NCVER collections, and are willing to design and generate their statistical outputs directly. You must register for VOCSTATS access.

Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC)

AISC

The AISC is 'an industry-led body that provides advice on the implementation of national vocational education and training policies.'

Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA)

ASQA

ASQA is the national regulator of vocational education and training (VET). As part of their regulatory activity ASQA handle complaints about training providers.

Council of Australian Governments (COAG)

COAG

COAG is the peak intergovernmental forum in Australia, chaired by the Prime Minister. The Industry and Skills Council manages issues related to vocational education and training including apprenticeships and traineeships.

COAG Performance Reporting Dashboard

The Performance Reporting Dashboard reports on issues of national importance including education, and skills.

Department of Education and Training (Australian Government)

DET publications and resources

Publications related to the vocational education and training (VET) sector including the Skills@Work eNewsletter which is published monthly and provides specific information and resources for VET practitioners.

The Australian Blueprint for Career Development is a framework for designing, implementing and evaluating career development programs for young people and adults

Department of Employment (Australian Government)

Job Outlook

Provides data about job prospects, weekly earnings, type of work and other useful information for over 350 occupations.

Labour Market Information Portal

The Labour Market Information Portal provides a wide range of data on employment and labour market characteristics and links to skills related websites.

National, state and territory skills shortage information

Lists of skill shortages for Australia and each state and territory based on the latest available Department of Employment research.

Skills Service Organisations (SSO)

Skills Service Organisations

The SSOs support Industry Reference Committees in developing and reviewing training packages. For AISC information on the SSOs please click here.

International

Associations

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA)

IVETA is a network of individuals and organisations interested in vocational education and training worldwide. They are 'dedicated to the advancement and improvement of high-quality vocational education and training throughout the world'.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

The OECD has 35 member countries including Australia, the United Kingdom and United States. They have several resources on vocational education and training (VET) including apprenticeships and traineeships, plus policy reviews of VET and adult learning. They also run the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC).

Government Organisations

Ako Aotearoa (NZ)

Ako Aotearoa is the National Center for Tertiary Teaching Excellence in New Zeleand. They have resources and research on the vocational education and training (VET) sector including apprentices.

United Kingdom Further Education and Skills (UK)

Information on Apprenticeships in the UK, including information for becoming or employing an apprentice, becoming a training provider, information for parents and teachers, and about the apprenticeship levy and funding.

Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (Canada)

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum analyses issues of interest to the apprenticeship community across Canada, such as employer engagement, essential skills, completion and outcomes, gathering findings in comprehensive resources.

Associations

Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association (AVETRA)

AVETRA is a national independent association of researchers in vocational education and training (VET). They hold annual events including a conference and OctoberVET, and have resources for those interested in VET research.

Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET)

ACPET represents the private education and training sector in Australia, and has information and events on vocational education and training including apprenticeships and traineeships.

TAFE Directors Association (TDA)

TAFE Directors Australia (TDA) is the peak national body incorporated to represent Australia’s public vocational education and training (VET) providers. They have news and events on the Australian VET sector including apprenticeships and traineeships.

Surveys

Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY)

LSAY tracks samples of Australian youth from the age of 15 to 25 years, with participants completing a survey annually. Completed cohorts started in 1995, 1998, 2003 and 2006. Current cohorts started in 2009 and 2015. Participants are asked about a variety of topics including their education and employment.

Mission Australia Youth Survey

Surveying Australian's aged 15 to 19 years on topic of importance to youth including education and employment. The research is used to 'inform the agendas of governments, policy makers and community organisations'.

The VOCEDplus Pod Network has specific resources on apprentices and trainees, including Australian and international research, news, events, and further resources.

VOCEDplus Timelines

The History of VET in Australia: Focus on Apprenticeships and Traineeships Timeline includes legislation, key reports and events from 1939 to 2015.

Research Organisations

Brotherhood of St Laurence

The Research and Policy Centre at the Brotherhood of St Laurence undertakes research into education, work and economic security amongst others.

Foundation for Young Australians (FYA)

The Foundation for Young Australians undertakes research into factors impacting young Australia's lives, including education and employment.

Mitchell Institute

The Mitchell Institute was established by Victoria University to work across the Australian education system, including schooling, vocational education and training (VET) and higher education.

Wages

FairWork Ombudsman

FairWork Ombudsman

The FairWork Ombudsman has information about the legal employment requirements for employers who hire apprentices and trainees, including information on wage entitlements.

The Pay and Conditions Tool (FairWork Ombudsman)

The Pay and Conditions Tool (PACT) allows an employer or employee, including apprentices and trainees, to find the relevant award they should be working under. This includes information on the hourly wage, penalty rates, and leave entitlements.
