Overview

The Tourism, Travel and Hospitality industry has two major sectors:

Tourism includes both domestic and international travel and involves the purchase of a wide range of goods and services.  To give a few examples, these may be provided by transport and tour operators, travel agencies, hotels and resorts, theme parks, tour guides, museums and historical sites, restaurants, cafes and clubs.

The Hospitality sector is one of the largest employers in Australia. It includes businesses that provide accommodation, meals and drinks services and businesses such as hotels, motels, resorts, cafes, restaurants, clubs and casinos.

Industry Information

Hospitality

There are about 66,000 employers that operate in the hospitality sector. Most of these are small businesses, with less than 12% employing more than 20 people. The biggest sector within hospitality is cafes and restaurants, with 32,000 businesses, followed by takeaway food services with 18,000 businesses.

There are about 824,000 people in Australia employed in the hospitality sector. This number is expected to rise by 12% to 923,000 by 2020. As well as this, 567,000 people work in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services.

Tourism and Travel

13% of Australian businesses (267,000) are in tourism. Approximately 95% of them are micro or small businesses that don’t employ any staff other than the owners.

929,000 people are employed directly or indirectly in the tourism industry (8% of total employment).
