The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry is broad and encompasses a range of different sectors including those that provide information technology (IT) products and services, retail IT, helpdesk, as well as telecommunications in areas like network engineering and cabling.

What does this industry cover?

  • Information Technology covers writing, modifying and testing software and providing user support for software, hardware and cloud technologies
  • Digital Media includes the design and production of multimedia and games for platforms including PC, console, online and mobile
  • Telecommunications covers sustainable networks, IP networks, optical and radio networks, mesh networks, cloud networks, information technology and digital media.

Industry Information

The information technology sub-sector contains about 50,000 businesses ranging from micro employers to large companies. This does not include IT employers that are in non-IT organisations.

Although there are some large organisations, a lot of these businesses are micro or small employers, with only a few staff. 

Telecommunications: There are about 1,000 employers in the telecommunications sector and less than 100 of those employers employ more than 20 people. 

There are three major companies in the Australian telecommunications services industry, with a workforce of 75,000.
